Amazon just launched 1-hour delivery in hundreds of U.S. cities.

90,000+ products. Seven days a week. $9.99 for Prime members.

On the surface, this looks like a convenience play. Faster delivery for household essentials, OTC meds, beauty products, electronics.

Look deeper.

Amazon already owns same-day and next-day for most categories. So why invest in a 1-hour window...

And price it at $9.99 for Prime and $19.99 for non-Prime?

Because they're going after the last purchase occasion they don't control: the "I need it right now" moment.

That's Instacart's territory. DoorDash's. Uber's. Quick commerce has been eating into Amazon's share of impulse and urgent purchases for years.

More than just about getting paper towels to you faster, this is about making sure you never open another delivery app.

Here's what this means for brands:

If your product is in one of the eligible categories — household, health, beauty, electronics — your listing is now competing in a 1-hour fulfillment window. That changes what "in stock" means.

A single day out of stock could cost you the buy box in a channel that refreshes hourly.

The 3-hour tier is already in 2,000+ cities and towns. This isn't a pilot. Amazon is scaling this fast, including into smaller markets like Cornwall, PA and Harrah, OK

If you're only optimizing for standard Prime delivery, you're already behind.

Non-Prime customers can access 1-hour delivery for $19.99. That's a clear acquisition funnel — give non-members a taste of speed, then convert them to Prime when the $9.99 price point becomes the habit.

Amazon didn't build this for convenience. They built it to make every other delivery app irrelevant.

If you're a brand selling consumables or replenishables on Amazon, your supply chain strategy just got a new constraint: can your inventory support hourly fulfillment windows?

That's the real question.
