Conversion rate is the new ranking king.

And brands are still only optimizing for clicks.

Here's what changed in Amazon's 2026 algorithm update:

Amazon doesn't just care if people click on your listing anymore.

⤷ They care what happens AFTER the click.

These are now primary ranking signals:

→ Add-to-cart rate

→ Session length on your listing

→ Scroll depth through A+ content

→ Image engagement (zoom, carousel clicks)

Think about what that means:

You can drive 10,000 sessions to your listing.

But if 8,000 people bounce in 5 seconds?

⤷ Amazon sees that as: "This listing doesn't match search intent."

Your organic rank tanks.

Your ads get more expensive.

You're in a death spiral.

I saw this play out last week with a home goods client:

Month 1 (before we touched anything):

→ 12,000 sessions

→ 9% conversion rate

→ Average session time: 22 seconds

→ Page 3 organic ranking

Month 2 (after optimizing for engagement):

→ 11,800 sessions (slightly lower)

→ 24% conversion rate

→ Average session time: 1 min 47 sec

→ Page 1 organic ranking

We didn't increase traffic.

We made the existing traffic MATTER.

How?

→ Rewrote bullets to address top objections from reviews

→ Added storytelling A+ content that people actually scroll through

→ Redesigned image stack to answer questions sequentially

→ Added comparison charts in A+ to keep people engaged

Amazon's algorithm noticed people were staying.

They were adding to cart.

They were actually READING the content.

And Amazon said: "This listing deserves more visibility."

Here's the lesson:

Stop only chasing clicks.

Once click is won, start optimizing for engagement.

Because in 2026, Amazon doesn't rank listings that get traffic.

They rank listings that CONVERT traffic.
