Are You Pricing for Growth … or Just Hoping It Works Out?

Amazon agency owners, let’s talk about something most people tiptoe around.

Pricing.

You’ve probably heard the claims:

“Our model is the fairest.”

“The smartest.”

“The one that finally fixes everything.”

And I understand the instinct. We all want to believe the way we charge makes sense.

But here’s the truth many won’t say out loud:

No pricing model works if it doesn’t fit how you actually serve clients, and how they actually operate. If there’s friction there, you’ll feel it, usually in the form of:

Scope creep.

Quiet resentment.

Or teams stretched thinner than planned.

So start with the real question: Is your pricing protecting your team?

Does it genuinely cover your cost to serve?

Does it leave healthy margin when clients grow more demanding?

Because building an agency that constantly absorbs extra work isn’t admirable.

It’s unsustainable.

Let’s look at the models most agencies lean on.

➡️ Flat retainers.

Predictable.

Comforting.

Easy for clients to understand.

But when ambition expands (and it always does), does your resourcing keep pace?

If not, that pressure lands on you.

➡️ % of ad spend.

Simple to explain.

Easy to scale.

But if most of your value comes from commercial judgement rather than simply “spending more,” are you being paid for thinking… or activity?

➡️ Revenue share.

Powerful alignment when it’s clearly defined.

But vague definitions create risk for both sides. Transparency matters here.

➡️ Hybrid models.

Often the most balanced approach.

Just keep the structure clean. Complexity creates confusion, and confusion erodes trust.

Here’s the part many agencies overlook: Pricing doesn’t just shape revenue.

It shapes behaviour and it influences:

What you prioritise.

How clients measure success.

Where stress shows up inside your team.

So it’s worth asking yourself:

Does your model reward busywork… or outcomes?

Does it create alignment with clients… or quiet tension?

Does it give you confidence that when things go well, everyone benefits fairly?

A healthy pricing model does more than bill clients.

It protects your people.

It respects your time.

And it encourages genuine partnership.

When incentives align, conversations get easier.

Results improve.

Relationships last longer.

And growth stops feeling forced.

So if your pricing model no longer supports the agency you’re building…

You’re allowed to change it.

Most founders just wait far too long.
