The first time we hit a record sales month on Amazon… I remember feeling pretty uncomfortable.
The plan we'd created and aligned on was working..sales had hit a record high, 1000's of units shipped, we were above budget YTD, the team was happy, the relationship with Amazon seemed great!
I remember relooking at the numbers...and thinking the way we'd made it happen wasn't sustainable.
We'd agreed to fund volume and sales growth to protect market share
We'd absorbed cost price increases to ensure the whole Amazon business wasn't derailed
The internal agreement was that it was a short term agreement and we'd get it back
But together they'd impacted the margin massively...and I knew it wasn't something we could keep doing.
Sales are great but the real measure of success is margin.
