Most Amazon sellers are running PPC like a religion.
Auto finds winners.
Exact takes over.
Negate the Auto.
Sounds clean.
Also wrong.
Search term isolation is one of the most overused strategies in Amazon Ads.
Overlap isn’t the problem.
Uncontrolled overlap is.
I’ve audited accounts spending $50k+ a month where Auto was quietly driving the cheapest conversions in the entire structure.
Lower CPC.
Broader reach.
Better blended ACoS.
Then someone “optimized” it.
Pulled every converting term into Exact.
Negated it out of Auto.
Watched CPCs climb and volume drop.
Because here’s what no one tells you:
Auto doesn’t just find terms.
It finds placements.
It finds variations.
It finds cheap pockets of traffic your Exact campaign will never bid into efficiently.
When you strip every winner out, you’re not cleaning structure.
You’re starving a discovery engine that was still printing money.
Isolation works when:
• Budgets are tight and control matters more than scale
• CPC gaps are massive between match types
• You actually monitor performance weekly
It fails when:
• You negate blindly
• You assume overlap = waste
• You chase “clean” instead of profitable
Most accounts don’t need perfect isolation.
They need controlled redundancy.
That’s a different mindset.
And it usually makes more money.
So I’ll ask you straight:
Do you still isolate search terms?
Yes or no?
(And if yes… are you checking whether Auto was cheaper before you kill it?)
Curious how you’re structuring yours right now.
