Google & Walmart?
They just made Amazon optional for product discovery.
On January 11, they announced that Walmart and Sam's Club products are integrated directly into Google's Gemini AI assistant. Customers can ask Gemini for recommendations, see Walmart options, and buy - without ever touching Amazon.
Here's why this matters:
For years, Amazon was the default starting point for product searches.
That behavior is ending.
AI assistants are becoming the new entry point, and they don't default to Amazon - they pull from whoever provides structured, AI-readable data.
When Gemini users ask "What's the best standing desk under $500?" they now see Walmart options automatically.
If they buy, it happens through Walmart's checkout.
⤷ Amazon isn't in the conversation.
This follows Walmart's ChatGPT integration last fall. Walmart is now in ChatGPT & Gemini. If you're only selling on Amazon, you're invisible to millions of shoppers starting their journey in AI assistants.
Google also launched the Universal Commerce Protocol - open infrastructure for AI agents to shop across retailers. The Home Depot & Wayfair are already piloting it. Every major platform will eventually integrate, and early movers capture the discovery layer.
The strategic threat: AI agents don't search like humans.
They don't browse pages or click through results. They evaluate structured product data - attributes, pricing, availability, reviews - and present the best options based on the customer's specific query.
If your listings are keyword-stuffed for traditional SEO, AI can't parse them effectively.
They need conversational language that answers:
☑ What is this?
☑ Who's it for?
☑ What problem does it solve?
If you're not on Walmart yet, that just became a strategic gap.
Gemini integration makes Walmart a tier-one discovery platform. Also, audit your product content across every channel - ensure titles, descriptions, and attributes are AI-readable and consistent. Finally, check price and availability across platforms. AI agents will route customers to wherever offers the best experience.
Product discovery just moved off Amazon's platform.
Be where the AI agents are looking.
