Step by step guide to running 100km in one day without proper training:
1) Take your first step
2) Keep taking steps until you've taken 105,899
Due to a massive case of can't be ars*d and back issues, I really didn't get much training in for this.
At one point I went for a 1.8km run with a month to go, and just went home because I was so bored.
In December I was reading a guide that suggested XYZ runs per week and XYZ km per month and XYZ pacing, hill training, speed sessions, strength work, etc etc
All bol*cks apparently.
I find a disgusting level of positive mindset and self-confidence will just do the job.
Throughout most of the circa 14h day we were in great spirits. Jovial. Repulsive humour. And looking to make light of what was quite a dark dingy existence.
Despite leading up to it feeling a bit of a skinny fat mess. Wondering if this was the time I'd bitten off more than I could chew. And I'd fail.
So, next time you look at that marathon place, or hike, or charity cycle...and think, nah that's too much training.
Perhaps it's not. It's amazing what you can achieve if you don't care about the time.
One of the pleasures of trail running is nobody asks your time.
I can't help but feel the 21km now has an immediate "what time did you do it in" attached to it. Why?
Pro tip: do a trail 21 on your own. People are bewildered by the term trail and it can cover up all social judgement.
