I'm currently running a deluded experiment.
Paying $30 for someone to find flights for me.
My thought process:
- Someone out there must be a freaky expert at getting the best deals. If it's $30 cheaper than me doing it I've made money.
- A friend recently booked ~3 flights and hotels for me. The experience of him doing it instead of me was delightful.
- The time alone is probably a money-saving. Providing I rate myself to be ~$30 an hour.
- My Mrs has a lot more stress than me with work etc. He's performing the task for her too. At the end of a hard day she doesn't have to embark on another minor/major stress of flight hunting. Someone has done the heavy lifting. (I also get boyfriend brownie points).
The first person was fantastic. He worked hard. He explored options/routes I hadn't considered and found 2 brilliant deals. Saving me ~$200.
Sadly, despite him reviewing the booking agents' reviews, on two occasions they cancelled my flights. eDreams and TravelGenio, in case you were wondering.
I ended up buying the most expensive flight of my life. Shit happens. It's expensive atm. BUT, he was great.
The second guy said he had some other tricks. He's currently saving the Mrs about £300 in return flights from Sydney to Europe.
I intend to test a third after this. Will update you on how that goes.
I'll pool their knowledge together and pick my favourite.
I'll perhaps use Revolut virtual (one-use) cards with a spending cap and get that person to book for me in the future as well. Risky. Needs some more thought.
Is this deluded? Perhaps.
If nothing else I enjoy the experiment.
