Patagonia started using recycled polyester in the 90’s.
It cost 20% more than virgin polyester.
They didn’t mind. Their Common Threads line was winning hearts and customers.
So they continued to grow.
This mindset can be compared to Amazon’s own.
Amazon puts their principles first. Even if it costs more to do so.
Customer obsession has certainly cost Amazon over the years, but the brand moat is now enormous because of it. Paying them back tenfold.
The same can be said for Patagonia. Their brand moat is a thing of a beauty.
They weren’t growth obsessed. They were “Do Good” obsessed. And their customer base responded.
Other highlights of this include when they got rid of their metal climbing pegs because they damaged rock surfaces. Despite them representing 70%+ of sales.
I feel companies that stick to their principles, stick around a little longer.
