John Lewis lose £648m so are now building homes for rent.
Amazon and Ecommerce have shafted department stores over the list 18-months. Clever clogs JL aren’t gonna be another Blockbuster though.
Rather than pretending like nothing is wrong, they’re pivoting. Does it seem strange, yes, but given the strength of their brand I believe they’ll be successful.
If you’re British you’re probably like me. You enjoy just being in a John Lewis store and would struggle to put your finger on why.
My gran used to head over to the Peterborough one at weekends even if she had little intention or need to buy anything. Admittedly, she was old and there wasn’t a great deal of action going on, but the point still stands.
If they can take this enormous trust consumers have in their brand and apply it to a market where there is friction then I think they’ll do well.
