At 1:50 am I started running.
The same as 24-hours ago, and every 4-hours in between. 4 miles, every 4 hours, for 48 hours.
Here’s what I learned from running 2 marathons in 2 days and taking part in this stupid challenge.
➡️ Get comfortable being uncomfortable. A mantra I’ve had when exercising for the last 9-12 months. Something I’d like to ingrain in everything I do. Nothing screams discomfort like pounding blisters for no reason whatsoever.
➡️ Doubling your goal changes perception. 6am, 44-hours in, I’d just finished my 11th run. It dawned on me that I would in fact run 48 miles. 4.44 miles short of 2 marathons. This fucked me off a little bit. So close so far sort of thing. So I pondered the idea of doubling my final leg. Despite grimacing my way through the final 1600m of the last couple of legs. But once I had changed my goal from 6.44km to 12.88km, I breezed through the halfway mark. In fact, I was better than ever. Did the upgrade in music from country bangers to Red Hot Chilli’s come into play, perhaps. But I think it was more my perception of the goal.
➡️ Tell people your goal to become more accountable. Initially, I liked the idea of just uploading it to Strava and looking cool as fuck every 4-hours. The final double trouble idea though sounded pretty tough and I didn’t truly decide until an hour before. So, I told my mate I was gonna do a double. Once it was down, I knew I’d feel bad if I didn’t do it. Set a tough goal, then tell people. Often the fear of looking stupid my drive you to achieve it.
Any other stupid challenges people have I'd be open to looking at them. Or if you've had a crack at this hell-ish workout by David Goggins, let me know how you found it.
