I got disqualified from IRONMAN 70.3.

It was after 5 hours and 40 minutes of grunt when I realised. Heart rate had been cruising at 165bpm for the last 300 minutes. I cruised round the final corner, having been in survival mode for 3k, then me and this guy both had this strange sense.

We'd not said a word to each other, but with 80m to go of what was frankly a dull race, we both were thinking the same thing...

"it's fucking on"

As I picked up the pace so did he. He nudged then I nudged. Miserable Mary's and moping Michaels' found their sideline-soul and the noise rumbled. Chopping down the final 40 metres of the 113,000 route. Then it was over.

A squeal of joy when the pair of us cantered over the line. In our heads we were Shadowfax from Lord of the Rings, in reality, we were Donkey from Shrek.

We had a nice little embrace. How lovely. Then it was all stripped down by some tosser.

That tosser was actually me. Earlier on in the bike stint, I'd frisbeed an old energy gel into the foliage. Only to be red-carded by some chap on a motorbike. Seconds after I finished my embrace a lovely gentleman kindly delivered the news that due to my misdemeanours I would in fact be...disqualified.

Truth be told, I didn't really care. My main concern was "will I still get pictures" because I knew there would be some gems in there of me looking like an absolute rotter, see comments for that one.

Now, to tie it back to Amazon. What can we learn and apply here.

It will be really shit at times. You may have a fierce competitor, who's probably a similar human being like you. You will definitely do something wrong. You may get told off and punished. But all in you'll likely look back in a year from now and chuckle.
