In my drunken state, I handed the phone over to the Hungarian taxi driver, who at this point was stood in the hostel dorm, and climbed into my bunk - unbelievably thinking he'd be back tomorrow to give my phone back and collect the $3 fare.

Brands that help customers avoid some kind of negativity in life (and let their customers know what that negativity is) engage customers for the same reason good stories captivate an audience: they define what's at stake.

What's at stake could be sand on your towel

Leading to sand in your bag

Leading to sand in your phone

Your phone dying

Costing hundreds of pounds to repair

You get the picture

But you don't need to be that extreme

Simply reinforcing the reason why your customer purchased your product...

...is an absolute no brainer when you interact with them via your packaging and accompanying items.

"You bought this because sand is meant for the beach, not your bag"

I never saw that phone again, so it now sits on my uncomfortably long list of deceased iPhones. Although sorry for sucking you in with the oddly connected headline.
