More people talk to ChatGPT about buying products every day than visit Walmart.com.

According to new research from Harvard University and Duke University, ChatGPT users send more than 2.5 billion messages a day (~29,000 every second).

And here’s the kicker for brands:

About 2.1% of those conversations are about purchasable products—that’s roughly 52 million product-related questions every day (~600 every second).

To put that in context:

Walmart.com sees about 17 million visits per day (Similarweb). ChatGPT, by comparison, drives ~52 million daily purchase-related conversations—about 3x larger.

Now, a “conversation” isn’t the same as a “site visit.” But if this is where discovery starts today, imagine where it’s heading tomorrow.

What they are asking AI:

“What’s the best laptop under $1,000?”

“Which protein bar has the highest rating?”

“What’s a good streaming service?”

ChatGPT is quickly becoming a new front door for product discovery.

For brands selling at retail, this trend is impossible to ignore.
