Amazon cuts waste with radical packaging changes. Since 2015, Amazon has reduced packaging weight by 43%, eliminated plastic air pillows for recycled paper, and shipped 5.5 billion items in original product packaging across North America and Europe. These changes have prevented 3 million metric tons of waste while maintaining delivery efficiency.

This is how Amazon's Packaging Strategy has been going.

Amazon has been making big moves to reduce packaging, boost sustainability, and reshape how we receive our online orders. For every item shipped, they think less waste, better recycling, and efficient delivery.

Here’s all that they have done so far:

☑️ Less packaging for a bigger impact
Since 2015, Amazon has reduced the weight of per-shipment packaging by 43%, avoiding over 3 million metric tons of packaging waste. That’s the equivalent weight of nearly 500,000 average cars!

And in 2023 alone, Amazon shipped 12% of orders without any added packaging.

☑️ Goodbye, Plastic. Hello, Paper!
Globally, plastic usage per shipment has been down by 9% since 2023, and air pillows are now replaced with 100% recycled paper filler in the U.S. and elsewhere.

What's interesting is that recycled paper filler has some trade-offs for sellers. While it offers similar product protection, it typically weighs more than plastic air pillows, which could lead to slightly higher shipping costs.ç

☑️ Packaging That Works Smarter, Not Harder
With the Ships in Product Packaging program, 5.5 billion items have been shipped this way in North America and Europe. Less packaging also means fewer delivery trucks on the road, which is a win-win for reducing emissions.

But what do you think? Will all this be a new standard for all the different marketplaces or just a test to see how it goes?
